Tens of thousand of drivers were fined when TfL botched the implementation of a temporary speed limit on the A20 at the Sidcup by-pass. The inadequate signage meant many drivers thought they were driving at the correct speed limit. I am leading calls for an independent investigation into the shambles so that we can have points struck off, fines refunded and ensure this never happens again.
But that is not all. Labour, the Liberal Democrats and Greens are waging war on London’s drivers. Here in Bexley and Bromley many people need to drive. There is not the public transport connections for them not too. Labour’s ULEZ expansion has been exposed as making next to difference to air quality, yet the Conservatives had to fight tooth and nail to ensure Sadiq Khan’s Pay-Per-Mile scheme was dropped. I will oppose any attempt at Pay-Per-Mile.
Now Labour have introduced new tolls at Blackwall and are hiking the congestion charge. Along with the Lib-Dems and Greens, they continue to push for policies which will penalise the family car and businesses which depend on their vans. I am opposed to any policy designed to price people off the road.
All this at the same time as our roads are being left to crumble. Sadiq Khan’s Labour administration has cut more than £20 million (more than 90%) of the money TfL gives to councils to fix local roads used by buses since 2016. This is leaving our roads to crumble. I will continue to campaign for the Mayor to pay his bill so we can fix our roads.
Labour are also blocking councils like Bexley and Bromley from accessing vital road safety funding (Local Improvement Plan monies) unless the follow the Mayor’s anti-motorist policies like failed Low Traffic Neighbourhoods we have seen elsewhere in London. Which is why I am campaigning to reform the way the money is awarded to councils, so it can be used to improve road safety not ant-driver policies.
