Oyster Cards

Question No: 2025/1362

Question (Thomas Turrell AM | Bexley and Bromley): 22nd May 2025

Why is it not yet possible for Londoners to add Oyster Cards to their virtual wallets?

Answer (Sir Sadiq Khan | Mayor of London): 28th May 2025

TfL has a global reputation for continuing to lead the way in innovative payment options. The transformational Oyster card provided a world-leading service for TfL’s customers, making payments simple for everyone using London’s integrated transport network – and has been a trailblazer for public transport ticketing systems worldwide. Following the success of Oyster, contactless payment cards were introduced, and this technology has also since been adopted by cities across the world, helping to keep travel by public transport easy and accessible.

Building on this, TfL has been listening to feedback from customers and has been exploring the feasibility of integrating Oyster with virtual wallets, but this work requires significant investment. That is because in order to integrate Oyster with virtual wallets, TfL will need to update card readers across its buses and stations. TfL will continue to explore the modernisation of payment options for its customers, including integrating Oyster with virtual wallets.
