Question No: 2025/1282
Question (Thomas Turrell AM | Bexley and Bromley): 22nd May 2025
Will you congratulate Bromley Council for achieving over 50% of waste recycled in 2023-24, the first time a London borough has achieved this?
Answer (Sir Sadiq Khan | Mayor of London): 3rd June 2025
I welcome Bromley Council’s achievement in recording a household waste recycling rate of 50.9% in 2023/24. Several London boroughs have previously achieved a household waste recycling rate of over 50% since I was first elected Mayor, including Bexley, Ealing, Sutton and Bromley. These achievements have made a valuable contribution to my recycling targets, but demonstrate the need for continued effort.
Question No: 2025/1283
Question (Thomas Turrell AM | Bexley and Bromley): 22nd May 2025
What is your view of incinerators?
Answer (Sir Sadiq Khan | Mayor of London) : 28th May 2025
London is facing a climate emergency, and I have been clear that the city does not need additional waste incineration capacity to manage non-recyclable waste. My priority is to increase recycling rates across London in line with the waste hierarchy and reach net zero by 2030. I will continue to oppose any proposals for new incineration facilities in the capital.
At the same time, it is crucial that existing incinerators minimise their local environmental impact. That means ensuring that they manage only truly non-recyclable waste, maximise electricity generation, capture and use the waste heat, and operate with the best available techniques to reduce air pollution emissions.
